Moscow, 10 April 2025. – X5 Group (“X5”, MOEX: “X5”), a leading Russian food retailer that operates the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and Chizhik retail chains, today announced the start of construction on its own data centre (DC) in the Moscow Region. The new facility will serve as a cornerstone of X5’s digital infrastructure by ensuring resilient, self-sufficient and scalable IT services. The DC is expected to launch in Q3 2026.
The facility will host X5’s IT systems, including logistics, analytics and trade operations management. It will also support the development of core infrastructure, cloud platforms, big data processing, AI integration, backup systems and other digital services. In the long term, the DC will enable the flexible, rapid deployment and scaling of new products.
The DC is designed to adhere to the demands of high fault tolerance, energy efficiency and reliability. With an area of approximately 6,000 sq m and 10 MW of dedicated power supply, the facility will meet Tier III standards under the international classification system for data centre reliability and uptime.
The facility’s energy-efficient design includes dual independent power circuits, in-house standby generators and a high-performance direct free cooling (DFC) system. These features will ensure the uninterrupted operation of all critical IT systems, enable high power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce the DC’s environmental footprint.
“Digital infrastructure development is a top priority for X5. Building our own data centre will reduce reliance on third-party providers, enhance service reliability, and deliver superior solutions for both internal operations and customers. Furthermore, this investment will significantly lower total cost of ownership, reducing our expenses by more than threefold,” said Alexander Kostin, Managing Director of X5 Tech.
“Constructing and operating our own data centre represents a new challenge – and a new level of expertise – for X5. The facility will incorporate global best practices, leveraging cutting-edge cooling, power, and automation technologies to maximise reliability, performance and efficiency across all digital services. A dedicated team will oversee the data centre’s energy, climate control and engineering systems,” added Oleg Gavrilov, IT Services, Support and Infrastructure Director at X5 Tech.
