Chizhik opens two distribution centres in the Urals

Moscow, 12 December 2024 – X5 Group, a leading Russian food retailer, announces the opening of two new distribution centres (DCs) in Chelyabinsk and Perm in the Ural region to support its Chizhik hard discounter chain.

The new DC in Perm is designed as a logistics park that will support another X5 retail chain in addition to Chizhik. It will initially ship products to about 150 stores and will serve over 200 stores in the Perm Territory and the Republic of Udmurtia once fully ramped up. The 13,000-square-metre logistics park features storage areas for key product categories, including non-perishables, fruit and vegetables, fresh and frozen foods, and alcohol. The logistics park will process up to 750 tonnes of products daily. The facility currently handles shipments from more than 300 suppliers.

Measuring about 14,000 square metres, the DC in Chelyabinsk comprises several storage areas for key product categories (non-perishables, fruit and vegetables, fresh and frozen foods, and alcohol).  Its capacity is 750 tonnes of products daily, similar to the DC in Perm. The new logistics hub currently serves about 60 stores and is expected to ship products to more than 200 stores across the Chelyabinsk Region in the future. The hub currently handles shipments from more than 300 suppliers.

Up to 200 employees and about 50 vehicles will ensure the operation of each of the two new facilities in the Urals. In addition, the logistics hubs use the TopLog warehouse management system (WMS) to optimise goods storage, reduce the likelihood of errors during goods acceptance and kitting, and reduce picking time.

Chizhik is actively expanding its logistics infrastructure in line with X5’s goal to accelerate the development of its hard discounter chain. Chizhik operated 2,100 stores in 44 regions as of the end of November and continues to expand at a rapid pace. The retail chain has opened a total of 17 DCs to date.
